The Annunciation

"Him whom the heavens cannot contain, the womb of one woman bore"
(from a sermon by St Augustine of Hippo)

Dear All, today is the feast of the Annunciation.

It's the commemoration, with thanksgiving, of a 'YES' to God. An unqualified 'YES' with no strings or conditions attached that serves as an example to us all.

Remember the story as told by St. Luke? The Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38)

I always wonder if when Jesus composed the Lord's Prayer and taught us to pray 'Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done', he was echoing something his Mother had modelled and taught him all his life. After all there's not a lot of difference between Jesus saying, 'Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done' and Mary saying, 'Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to Thy word'.

The painting below is by a contemporary Ukranian icon painter called Ivanka Demchuk. I've bought a few of hers in the past and I love how she interprets iconic moments from the Gospels.

Happy feast!
